South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) failed to receive a majority government, in keeping with pre-election polling. The ANC has reached a coalition agreement with its largest rival the Democratic Alliance (DA) as well as the Inkatha Freedom Party and Patriotic Alliance. President Cyril Ramaphosa is seeking a second term as the new parliament convenes to elect the president.

Niger’s top court has lifted immunity for deposed President Mohamed Bazoum, in a process heavily criticized by rights groups and lawyers. Bazoum has been detained since his overthrow in 2023. The military government seeks to charge him with “high treason.”

  • The Government of Kenya has proposed a controversial finance bill aimed at broadening the government’s tax base. Critics argue the bill would worsen the country’s cost of living crisis.
  • Senegal begins first production of oil at its first offshore project.
  • Morocco hosts Gitex Africa, a tech summit featuring 1,500 exhibitors showcasing technological innovations for and from the African continent.
