September 12 marked the 50th anniversary of the Derg takeover of Ethiopia and the overthrow of Haile Selaisse. DW looks at how the former Emperor is remembered by Ethiopians. Mengistu Haile Mariam, leader of the Derg until its own overthrow in 1991, lives in Zimbabwe today, much to the criticism of his regime’s victims.

South Africa mourns the death of James Matthews, legendary poet and author whose anti-apartheid works were banned by the National Party. Matthews died at age 94.
