Al Jazeera is promoting two documentaries on South Sudan’s influential de Mabior family. Dr. John Garang de Mabior founded the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), and promoted a vision of a secular, multi-ethnic “New Sudan.” His ideas would lead to South Sudanese independence, though he himself would not live to see it following a helicopter accident in 2005. His widow, Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior, is one of South Sudan’s five vice-presidents since 2020. She is an advocate for peace in the new country, and previously went into exile over criticism of the South Sudanese government.

The Niger military government has stated they will prosecute deposed President Mohamed Bazoum for high treason and undermining state security. The military claims to be open to talks with Nigerian officials towards a diplomatic resolution.

  • General Burhan of the Sudanese Army accuses the rival Rapid Support Forces of war crimes in the country’s civil war.
  • South African singer Miriam Makeba was a fashion icon as well as a musical one. OkayAfrica highlights how her fashion, now being celebrated at the Brooklyn Museum, celebrated African heritage.
  • The Kenyan government has offered to lead a UN mission to Haiti, working with local police to restore order from a 2021 presidential assassination and rising gang violence. Critics point to the Kenyan police’s poor human rights track record in recent protests in Nairobi.
