Polls opened on Saturday for the Nigerian presidential elections. Al Jazeera has a list of the key voting blocs in what is shaping up to be the most interesting race since the return to democracy in 1999.

Burkina Faso is set to rebury iconic leader Thomas Sankara and twelve other revolutionaries who were assassinated alongside him in 1987.

  • Eugenia Kargbo, Freetown’s first “Chief Heat Officer,” will be responsible for researching, adapting to, and informing the public on extreme heat caused by climate change. Sierra Leone is at high risk from rising temperatures.
  • African Queens: Njinga was released on Netflix on February 15th. The miniseries combines documentary and drama formats to tell the story of Queen Njinga of Ndongo and Matamba.
  • The Republic has launched Atlas, a new website for sourcing images from African photographers.
