Nigeria’s Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal, formed after multiple parties challenged the results of the February election, has ruled in favour of the Indepenent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The tribunal maintained that the results released by INEC showing APC candidate Bola Tinubu’s victory were valid, and that INEC’s last minute decision not to transmit election results electronically was within its discretion.

Ugandan musician and opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, is the subject of a new documentary: Bobi Wine: The People’s President. The Guardian offers a favourable review. Luke Melchiorre of the University of the Andes describes Wine’s success as a novel example of generational populism in a 2022 article. 

  • Kenya and Tanzania have dropped visa requirements for Congolese nationals visiting their countries, a continuation of DRC’s ascension into the East African Community. 
  • For the Republic’s Pan-Africanism issue, Wale Lawal writes on the present state of Pan-Africanism, 60 years after the founding of the Organization of African Unity.
  • The Headies, an awards ceremony celebrating African music, was hosted on 3 September. The official website has photos and the full list of winners.  Ayra Starr, winner of Best Female Artist, called out the organizers for not announcing the award on stage.
